Cushmir McBride, a Pennsylvania man, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for his involvement in a ring that blew up ATM machines and stole over $400,000 during protests in Philadelphia over the police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. McBride, along with Nasser McFall and Kamas Thompson, carried out a series of violent crimes by detonating explosives inside ATMs at various locations. The group capitalized on the chaos and looting that occurred during the protests following Wallace’s death. The explosives used were described as “M-type devices” with enough power to cause serious harm or death. Several individuals, including McBride, were arrested and charged in connection with the incidents, with over 90 people arrested during the protests. In a separate incident, Philadelphia Police found a van loaded with explosives, leading to more arrests. The protests were tense as community members demanded accountability for Wallace’s death, which occurred during a response to a mental health call. The Wallace family settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city for $2.5 million in 2021. The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania commended the arrest and sentencing of McBride and his accomplices for their dangerous and criminal activities.
