Turkish-American activist mourned at funeral after being fatally shot by Israeli soldier

A Turkish-American activist, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, was buried in Turkey following her tragic death at the hands of Israeli forces during a protest in the West Bank. Eygi, who held US and Turkish citizenship, was shot and killed while peacefully demonstrating against settlement expansion. The Israeli military claimed the shooting was unintentional, but fellow protesters reported that Eygi posed no threat at the time and was shot during a moment of calm.

Turkey has promised to conduct its own investigation into Eygi’s death, with the speaker of the Turkish parliament demanding accountability for her murder. Thousands of mourners gathered to bid farewell to Eygi, with her death sparking widespread condemnation and calls for a cease-fire in the region. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, along with other countries, has urged for the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan likened the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories to the genocide that occurred in Bosnia in the 1990s. Talks for a cease-fire have faced obstacles as both Israel and Hamas refuse to concede to each other’s demands. Eygi’s tragic death has brought renewed attention to the ongoing conflict in the region and the need for a peaceful resolution.
