B-2 bombers used by U.S. to target Houthi rebels in Yemen

On Wednesday, U.S. B-2 bombers carried out a strike on weapons caches owned by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. This is believed to be the first use of the stealth bomber against the militia. The operation, authorized by President Biden and carried out by Defense Secretary Austin, aimed to weaken the rebels’ ability to attack ships in the Red Sea. The use of the B-2 bomber and its bunker-busting capabilities was a demonstration of the U.S.’s ability to target hardened underground facilities. The strikes could also serve as a warning to Iran amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel.

The attacks on the Houthi rebels come in the context of their support for Palestinians in Gaza. The rebels have sporadically targeted ships in the Red Sea, particularly during the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The increased attacks led to a series of U.S.-led strikes against the rebels’ targets, including radars, runways, and missile launch sites. U.S. forces have also intercepted Houthi drones and missiles aimed at Israel.

The initial findings of the strike do not indicate any civilian casualties, and the U.S. Central Command is assessing the battle damage. The escalating conflict in Yemen, combined with the rebels’ support for Hamas, has drawn increased international attention and military action. The U.S. is using its strategic capabilities to target and weaken the Houthi rebels, while also sending a message to Iran and other adversaries.
