In the aftermath of the storm: a surge of falsehoods and hatred against Jews

In the wake of Hurricane Helene devastating North Carolina, the worst weather has unfortunately brought out the worst in some individuals. Examples include Donald Trump spreading malicious lies about FEMA, Marjorie Taylor Greene promoting conspiracy theories about weather control and Jewish space lasers, and Elon Musk providing a platform for these lies on social media. The Institute for Strategic Dialogue found 33 posts on social media containing debunked claims regarding the hurricane, with 17 million views of antisemitic hate directed at public officials involved in the recovery effort.

The spread of misinformation on social media has dangerous consequences, including the arrest of a man making threats against FEMA workers and reports of armed individuals searching for federal workers. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper expressed concern that toxic rumors could deter people from seeking FEMA assistance. The attacks and threats against those providing aid in the aftermath of the hurricane are described as “evil” and deeply troubling.

The Sun Sentinel Editorial Board condemns these actions and calls for accountability, particularly the expulsion of Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress. The article highlights the historical roots of antisemitic conspiracy theories and the dangerous combination of social media, misinformation, and political exploitation. It emphasizes the need for truth and responsible leadership in times of crisis.
