Former One Direction band member Liam Payne, 31, passed away after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. The cause of death was confirmed as “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding” according to an autopsy report from the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office. The death was labeled as “doubtful/undetermined,” indicating uncertainty about the exact cause.
Prior to his death, substances indicating alcohol and drug use were seized from Payne’s room. Despite previous substance abuse issues, he was found alone when the fall occurred and no defensive injuries were present. An investigation is ongoing to determine if third parties were involved in the events leading up to his death.
Polytrauma, which involves multiple life-threatening injuries, was the cause of Payne’s death. An immediate primary brain injury or significant blood loss usually leads to death in cases of polytrauma.
Simon Cowell, who played a role in the creation of One Direction, mourned Payne’s loss on Instagram. Payne fell from the Casa Sur hotel balcony in Buenos Aires and was declared dead on the scene. Authorities had responded to a 911 call from the hotel about a guest who had been destructive in their room while under the influence of drugs and alcohol shortly before Payne’s fall.
