Firefighters in the San Francisco Bay Area made progress in containing the Keller Fire in the Oakland Hills, which began on Friday and destroyed at least two homes. The fire, which burned about 15 acres, was at 50% containment as of Saturday morning. About 500 people were evacuated, but Interstate 580, which was closed near the scene, was later reopened. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
California is facing several wildfires, and a red flag warning was issued for dry and windy conditions in the Bay Area and Central Coast. The warning included winds of at least 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, along with low humidity and high temperatures. Pacific Gas and Electric shut off power for around 17,500 customers in 21 counties to prevent wildfires sparked by power lines.
In Northern California, the Diablo winds were expected to create fire-prone conditions. These dry winds, moving from inland areas to the coast, can exacerbate wildfires. In Southern California, the Santa Ana winds, which blow hot, dry air from the desert to the coast, were also a concern. Despite the red flag warning in Southern California, officials do not anticipate extending it beyond Saturday afternoon. The Santa Ana winds, with gusts of 25-40 mph, could lead to dangerous fire conditions.
