The G7 Defence Ministers reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine amidst escalating conflicts in the Middle East and Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed their determination to address security challenges in a time marked by great instability. They emphasized their commitment to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine in the short and long term.
Italy’s Defence Minister highlighted the deteriorated security framework globally, citing Russian aggression in Ukraine, the critical situation in the Middle East, instability in sub-Saharan Africa, and tension in the Indo-Pacific region. The ministers condemned Iran’s ballistic missiles and attacks on Israel and stressed the importance of all parties acting in accordance with international law.
The meeting in Naples, Italy, was attended by the High Representative of the European Union and NATO’s Secretary General. Discussions also focused on security in Africa, developments in the Asia-Pacific region, and threats to UNIFIL’s security in Lebanon. Italy, which holds the 2024 rotating chairmanship of the G7, reiterated the group’s commitment to a world order based on international law and democracy.
The joint declaration underlined the divide between countries that uphold international law and those that disrespect democracy through military force. The G7 ministers’ unity and support for Ukraine come amidst ongoing conflicts and global instability, with a shared goal of addressing security challenges and promoting peace and stability.
