Muslim and Arab students at the university feel marginalized and unsupported, especially in the wake of recent violence in Palestine and Lebanon. They have faced discrimination, surveillance, and police violence while advocating against genocide. The administration’s actions have been criticized for favoring Jewish students over marginalized groups.
In response to the leaked audio, the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter filed a complaint with the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights. However, the possibility of significant results remains questionable due to external pressures on universities to prioritize the wellbeing of Jewish students.
The broader issue highlighted by Ono’s comments is the failure of university administrators nationwide to protect all students equally. By succumbing to external pressures, they perpetuate a hierarchy of whose lives are deemed more valuable.
