As Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier faces crucial weeks ahead, one player stands out as pivotal to his future: freshman quarterback DJ Lagway. The Gators (4-3, 2-2 SEC) are eager to snap a three-game losing streak against rivals and ranked opponents, starting with their challenging match against No. 2 Georgia in Jacksonville this Saturday.
Lagway’s remarkable performances in two previous starts have ignited hope. After a shaky start to the season, which included significant losses to Miami and Texas A&M, a trio of victories has renewed faith in Napier. However, with a dismal 2-12 record against ranked teams, victory over Georgia is essential.
Despite opening as 16.5-point underdogs, Lagway’s skills could change the narrative. Completing 63% of his passes for 1,024 yards, including 715 yards and five touchdowns in his two starts, Lagway is proving to be a game-changer. His deep passing ability has been especially impressive, highlighted by ten completions of 40 yards or more.
