Dolphins Gear Up for Showdown with Patriots in 2024 Rematch
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are set for a pivotal clash against AFC East rivals, the New England Patriots, in a rematch at Hard Rock Stadium. This highly anticipated game on Sunday marks a significant shift from their previous encounter, which saw backup quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett and Tyler “Snoop” Huntley struggle in a 15-10 Dolphins victory at Gillette Stadium.
As the Dolphins (4-6) aim for a season turnaround, Tua Tagovailoa returns as their starting quarterback, hoping to extend his flawless 6-0 record against New England. In contrast, the Patriots (3-8) have initiated a new chapter with rookie quarterback Drake Maye, the team’s third overall pick in the 2024 draft.
Despite Tagovailoa’s strong record against the Patriots, his performance has been modest, accumulating seven touchdown passes to four interceptions, alongside impressive rushing stats. This matchup marks his first encounter with rookie coach Jerod Mayo, succeeding Bill Belichick.
Tagovailoa expressed respect for Maye, acknowledging the challenges of rookie life in the NFL while praising his potential. “He’s a rookie, so there’s going to be bumps within his journey, but you see a lot of flashes of things he can do,” said Tagovailoa.
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel highlighted Maye’s leadership capabilities and athleticism, recognizing the potential he brings to the Patriots’ offense. Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ offense has surged since Tagovailoa’s return, ranking eighth in league scoring over the past four games.
While the Dolphins successfully found a rhythm in their previous meeting, they anticipate needing new strategies to exploit the Patriots’ evolving defensive tactics. A sweep against New England would mark the first time since the 1999-2000 seasons that Miami has achieved consecutive victories over their longstanding rivals.
