The House Ethics Committee has declined to release a report on the yearslong investigation of former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz. The committee chair, U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, stated that there was no agreement to release the report after a closed-door meeting. Gaetz resigned from his seat in Congress after being nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for Attorney General. Some members of Congress have called for the report to be released before a confirmation vote on Gaetz’s nomination. The report is said to involve allegations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and granting special favors to romantic interests. Gaetz has denied all allegations. A lawyer for a witness who spoke to the Ethics Committee has claimed to have witnessed Gaetz having sex with a minor at a party in Orlando. Despite these claims, federal prosecutors have decided not to charge Gaetz with any crime. The decision to release the report ultimately lies with the Ethics Committee, not the Speaker’s Office. Democrats have called for the report to be made public, while some Republicans have expressed concerns about the potential impact on Gaetz’s nomination as Attorney General. The committee is set to reconvene on December 5 to discuss the report further.
