Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and several of his former officials have been accused by federal police of being involved in an attempted coup following his defeat in the 2022 election. Police allege that Bolsonaro and 36 others planned the violent overthrow of the democratic state, with ex-officials such as Walter Braga Netto, Augusto Heleno, Anderson Torres, and Valdemar Costa Neto also named in the investigation.
The findings are to be delivered to Brazil’s Supreme Court for further action by Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet. The case revolves around a conspiracy following Bolsonaro’s loss to left-wing rival President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2022. After Lula took office, Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed government buildings in Brasilia, with some calling for a military coup.
Allegations have also been made that some of those involved planned to assassinate Lula before he assumed office. Bolsonaro, however, denies any involvement in the events. The police investigation has led to arrests, with most of those involved in the alleged coup attempt being military personnel with special forces training.
The accusations against Bolsonaro and his associates come amid a tense political climate in Brazil, with concerns over the country’s democratic institutions and stability. The developments have drawn international attention to the situation in the South American nation, with many observers closely monitoring how the case unfolds in the coming days and weeks.
