Several Democratic Senators on the Judiciary Committee, along with some Republicans, are demanding to see the full evidence file on former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, who has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to be the next Attorney General. Gaetz has not been charged with any federal crimes but was involved in a sex trafficking investigation and a House Ethics Committee probe. The Senators wrote a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, expressing concern about Gaetz’s fitness to serve as the chief law enforcement officer. The federal investigation involved allegations that Gaetz and his friend, Joel Greenberg, paid underage girls and escorts for sex. Greenberg is currently serving a prison sentence after pleading guilty to the charges. The House Ethics Committee is also investigating Gaetz and is in talks about releasing its report. House Speaker Mike Johnson is against releasing the report, saying it is important for the committee to focus on members of Congress. The Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin and nine Senators joined the letter requesting the FBI’s evidence file. The letter highlights the seriousness of the allegations against Gaetz, especially given Greenberg’s guilty plea. The Republican members of the Judiciary Committee also expressed interest in seeing the investigative report. The letter is part of the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Gaetz’s nomination and his involvement in the investigations.
