Former state Senator Doug Broxson has announced that he will not run to succeed U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz in Congress. Broxson believes that the region would be better served by a younger politician who can build seniority over time. Gaetz resigned his seat after being nominated for Attorney General by President-elect Donald Trump, but later withdrew his name. Several candidates have entered the race for the potential Special Election, including state Reps. Joel Rudman and Michelle Salzman, former U.S. Senate candidate Keith Gross, and Bikers for Trump leader Bernadette Pittman. Broxson expressed the importance of evaluating the candidates based on their values, commitment to fighting federal overreach, and support for America’s military and veterans. With Gaetz’s seat still vacant, the upcoming election will be crucial for the district. It remains to be seen if Gaetz will be sworn in for a fifth term on Jan. 3 or if a Special Election will be held to fill the seat. Voters will now focus on choosing from the many candidates expressing interest in running for the Congressional District 1 seat.
