Amazon is making efforts to mend its relationship with the European Parliament after being denied access earlier this year. Key lawmakers have decided that Amazon must attend a hearing and organize a visit for MEPs to one of its fulfilment centers before restrictions on the tech giant’s access can be lifted. This decision comes after Amazon declined invitations to discuss working conditions in its EU facilities on multiple occasions. As a result, access badges for the company’s lobbyists were revoked, a move supported by over 30 trade unions across Europe.
In a letter to the chair of the Employment Committee, Amazon’s Director of EU Public Policy expressed the company’s desire to support the committee’s work and invited members to visit Amazon facilities. The company hopes to resolve concerns and engage with MEPs in a proactive and amicable manner.
UNI Europa Regional Secretary Oliver Roethig commended EU lawmakers for setting clear conditions for a fact-finding mission and hearing, which includes listening to workers’ representatives and trade unions to gain a better understanding of working conditions in Amazon’s warehouses. Lawmaker Leïla Chaibi emphasized the importance of holding companies like Amazon accountable and vowed to ask tough questions to ensure transparency during any future interactions with the tech giant.
Amazon’s efforts to restore its relationship with the European Parliament demonstrate a willingness to address concerns regarding working conditions and engage in constructive dialogue with policymakers.
