Florida’s Senate is set to have a significant presence from South Florida in leadership roles during the upcoming legislative session. Senate President Ben Albritton has announced committee Chairs and Vice Chairs, with more than half of the panels being headed by South Floridians. While most of the representatives from the region are Democrats, all four Republican members, including Bryan Ávila, Alexis Calatayud, Ileana Garcia, and Ana Maria Rodriguez, have been chosen as Chair designations.
Ávila will lead the Finance and Tax Committee, Garcia will helm the Appropriations Committee on Criminal and Civil Justice, Rodriguez will lead the Environmental and Natural Resources Committee, and Calatayud will chair the Education Postsecondary Committee. Other South Florida representatives will also hold significant Vice Chair positions in various committees.
Albritton emphasized the importance of including members of the minority caucus in key leadership roles to ensure all Senators feel heard and valued. Miami Gardens Sen. Shevrin Jones, Naples Republican Kathleen Passidomo, Boca Raton Democratic Sen. Tina Polsky, Boynton Beach Democrat Lori Berman, and other South Florida newcomers have also been appointed to leadership positions.
Overall, South Florida Senators will have a strong presence in the Senate leadership during the upcoming legislative session, with a focus on inclusivity and collaboration between both Majority and Minority Caucus members.
