Former Florida Detective Sentenced for Engaging in Sexual Relations with Teen
TAMPA, FL – A former detective with the Tampa Police Department, who became embroiled in legal troubles after engaging in sexual relations with a minor, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison. The 42-year-old, Charles F. Jones, was convicted of multiple charges, including unlawful sexual activity with a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, stemming from incidents that occurred after he met the victim at church.
The case was brought to light when the victim’s family discovered text messages and explicit content exchanged between Jones and the 16-year-old girl. In addition to his prison sentence, Jones was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the next 25 years following his release.
At the sentencing hearing, the prosecution emphasized the gravity of Jones’s actions, citing his position of authority as a former law enforcement officer, which made his betrayal of trust even more egregious. "You took advantage of your position and abused the trust placed in you," the judge stated, condemning his actions and highlighting the impact on the victim’s life.
Defense attorneys argued for a lenient sentence, depicting Jones as a man who had fallen from grace and had served his community well as a police officer for over two decades. However, the court ultimately ruled that the seriousness of the crimes necessitated a substantial prison term.
Jones, who had resigned from the police force amid the investigation, will begin serving his sentence immediately. This case serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for safeguarding minors and the consequences of violating that trust.
