Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has announced that he will not be running as a candidate for chancellor in the upcoming snap election in February. Instead, Pistorius has thrown his support behind incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s re-election bid. Pistorius made the announcement in a video posted on social media channels belonging to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he praised Scholz’s leadership during challenging times.
The snap election was called by Chancellor Scholz after the collapse of the ‘Traffic Light Coalition’, which consisted of the SDP, the FDP, and the Greens. The coalition fell apart after Scholz fired then Finance Minister and FDP party head, Christian Lindner, citing a lack of trust. With the government losing its majority in parliament, Scholz is now facing re-election in a challenging political landscape.
Despite Scholz’s popularity and leadership during crises, current opinion polls show the center-right Christian Democrats leading by a significant margin over the SDP. However, the SDP has confirmed that they will nominate Scholz as their lead candidate for chancellor next week. The election rules in Germany require a government confidence vote on December 16th before voters head to the polls on February 23.
Pistorius’s decision not to run clears the way for Scholz’s re-election bid, as he seeks to retain his position as chancellor and navigate the complexities of Germany’s shifting political landscape. As the election date approaches, the race for chancellor will be closely watched to see who will lead Germany through the challenges ahead.
