Six tourists killed by consuming alcohol in Laos: What is currently known? | Worldwide Report

Laos has recently been hit by a tragic incident of alcohol poisoning that has claimed the lives of six foreign tourists. The victims include two Australian teenagers, a British woman, two Danes, and one American national. Holly Bowles, 19, had been in critical condition and on life support following the poisoning but sadly passed away. The latest death occurred on Thai soil, where Holly was evacuated to after the incident. Her friend, Bianca Jones, also passed away due to the suspected poisoning. The official cause of death has been attributed to tainted alcohol, and the Lao government is currently investigating the matter.

The owner and manager of the hostel where the victims stayed have been detained by the police, although formal charges have not yet been brought against them. The two Australian teenagers were transferred to hospitals in Thailand for treatment after initially being treated in Laos. It is believed that the poisoning occurred after they consumed complimentary shots from the hostel and drank at a bar in Vang Vieng. The true source of the tainted drinks is still unknown.

Methanol, a substance that can make people feel intoxicated, has been linked to counterfeit alcohol replicas and illegal spirits. Foreign governments have issued statements, urging travelers to be cautious when consuming alcohol in Laos. The tragic deaths serve as a reminder of the dangers of tainted alcohol and the importance of being vigilant while traveling.
