President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, as his nominee for U.S. attorney general just hours after Matt Gaetz withdrew his consideration for the position. Bondi, a longtime Trump ally, was one of his lawyers during his first impeachment trial and has been a chair at the America First Policy Institute.
Trump praised Bondi’s appointment, stating that she will refocus the Department of Justice on fighting crime. Gaetz, who stepped aside due to a federal sex trafficking investigation, expressed that his confirmation was becoming a distraction and withdrew his name from consideration.
The swift selection of Bondi came after Trump sought to capitalize on his election win by nominating provocative selections like Gaetz to key positions. Other controversial nominees, including Pete Hegseth, face scrutiny due to allegations against them.
If confirmed by the Senate, Bondi would become a crucial member of Trump’s Cabinet, facing scrutiny over how she will handle civil rights, corporate enforcement, and the prosecutions of Trump supporters involved in the Capitol riot. Bondi’s potential confirmation may not overlap with the end of the cases brought against Trump, which are expected to conclude before the new president takes office.
In the past, Bondi has apologized for actions taken as Florida attorney general and has a background working in the legal field before her political career. Her nomination marks a significant development in the ongoing transition process for the incoming Trump administration.
