The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over suspected war crimes in Gaza. Despite Israel not recognizing the authority of the ICC, they are now fugitives from justice as 124 countries that are part of the ICC are legally bound to enforce its arrest warrants. International human rights lawyer Jonathan Kuttab stated that many of Israel’s allies, including the European Union, have committed to enforcing the arrest warrants. Netanyahu has dismissed the charges as anti-Semitic. The list of countries where Netanyahu and Gallant could be detained include Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Israel, Netherlands, South Africa, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, among others. It remains uncertain how the situation will unfold as Netanyahu and Gallant have not indicated a willingness to turn themselves in. The arrest warrants have sparked international attention and debate surrounding the accountability of world leaders for alleged war crimes.
