Greta Thunberg, the world-famous climate campaigner, has criticized the ongoing COP29 climate meeting as a failure, calling out those in power for agreeing to what she refers to as a “death sentence” for countless people affected by the climate crisis. Thunberg highlights the lack of meaningful solutions in the current draft text, pointing out the failure of Global North countries to fulfill their climate debt obligations.
The COP processes, according to Thunberg, are part of an unjust system designed to prioritize profit over the environment and future generations. She emphasizes the need for collective action and true leadership in addressing the climate crisis, as the current negotiations continue to disappoint.
Meanwhile, climate campaigners are also expressing disappointment in the proposed finance target of $250bn, calling it a “joke” and far below what is needed to support developing countries in combating climate change. Rich countries have now agreed to increase this offer to $300bn, but this is still deemed insufficient by many.
As the COP29 summit in Baku extends past its deadline, negotiations are ongoing to reach a consensus on climate finance and other key issues. The pressure is on for countries to deliver a meaningful outcome that addresses the urgent needs of vulnerable nations and accelerates global climate action. Stay tuned for further updates on the outcome of COP29 as negotiations continue throughout the weekend.
