President-elect Donald Trump has selected Scott Turner, a former professional football player, as the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Turner will be responsible for advising the president on housing needs for low and moderate-income families and increasing access to homeownership. He will need to be confirmed by the Senate before assuming the position. Turner previously served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, where he led efforts to transform distressed communities. Housing affordability was a key issue in the recent election, with rents in the US increasing by over 30% since 2019. Turner played in the NFL for nine years before winning a state house race in Texas, his home state. His work on Opportunity Zones, an economic development tool that encourages investment in distressed areas, attracted over $50 billion in private investment. Trump praised Turner’s leadership in this role.
