Trump Unveils Key Cabinet Nominations for Second Term

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has announced pivotal nominations for his forthcoming administration, solidifying his economic team and signaling a return to his previous policies. He will nominate hedge fund manager Scott Bessent as Treasury Secretary, a figure known for advocating deficit reduction and bipartisan support. Bessent, founder of Key Square Capital Management, brings a Wall Street background and could potentially become the nation’s first openly gay treasury secretary if confirmed. He emphasizes the importance of addressing the national debt, currently at $35.94 trillion.
Alongside Bessent, Trump nominated Russell Vought to lead the Office of Management and Budget, a position he previously held. Vought is recognized for his conservative stance and dedication to dismantling what he refers to as the "Deep State." Trump characterized Bessent as essential for ushering in a "new Golden Age," while he touted Vought’s capability in transforming government operations.
In addition to these roles, Trump appointed Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary and Scott Turner as Housing Secretary, reinforcing his focus on unifying Americans through his administration’s agenda. He also expanded his health team, nominating Dr. Janette Nesheiwat as surgeon general and Dr. Dave Weldon to lead the CDC, among others.
Bessent’s nomination comes after a campaign emphasizing economic growth over austerity, suggesting balanced approaches to taxation and tariffs, notably targeting China. Vought’s budget proposals promise significant cuts to various government programs, a reflection of his hardline fiscal approach. As Trump sets the stage for his second term, these nominations hint at a mix of financial pragmatism and conservative governance, shaping the administration’s direction in the coming years.
