Indian teenager Gukesh Dommaraju has made an impressive comeback in the ongoing World Chess Championship final against China’s reigning world champion, Ding Liren, in Singapore. After losing the opening game and drawing the second, Gukesh won the third game to tie the overall score at 1.5-1.5.
The 18-year-old grandmaster put Liren under pressure in Wednesday’s game, causing his opponent to fall behind on the clock and ultimately leading to a victory for Gukesh. Both players are now tied as they head into the rest day before Game 4 on Friday.
Gukesh expressed his excitement after the third game, highlighting his improved play and satisfaction with outplaying his opponent. Despite feeling nervous in the opening game, he managed to calm down and focus on his performance.
As the youngest player to challenge for the World Championship, Gukesh aims to surpass Garry Kasparov as the youngest undisputed world chess champion. With a total of 14 match days and four rest days scheduled, the first player to reach 7.5 points will be declared the winner, with tie-breaks available if the players are tied after 14 games.
Gukesh’s success has captured the attention of fans in India, where cricket typically dominates the sports scene. His journey in the final at Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa has garnered support from both young and old fans alike.
