President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jamieson Greer to serve as the United States trade representative, a key role in Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs on imports. Greer has previously worked in Trump’s administration and helped lead tariff hikes on goods from China. Trump recently announced plans to levy tariffs on products from Mexico, Canada, and China. Economists are concerned about potential consumer costs increasing as a result of these tariffs. Officials from China, Mexico, and Canada have criticized Trump’s tariff pledge. Greer, a former Air Force lawyer, currently works at a Washington-based law firm focusing on international trade. In other personnel moves, Trump named Kevin Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council and Vince Haley as director of the Domestic Policy Council. Hassett previously served as chair of the Council of Economic Advisers and played a key role in Trump’s tax cut package. Haley served in Trump’s 2024 campaign. Trump stated that Hassett will help American families recover from inflation caused by the Biden Administration and work to improve tax cuts and ensure fair trade.
