Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko believes that President-elect Donald Trump will try to “win” with his attempts at solving the war in Ukraine rather than suffer a “failure” like Joe Biden did in Afghanistan. The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan under the Biden administration in 2021 led to desperate scenes and violence. Trump has previously stated that he will end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” of taking office. While he hasn’t yet explained how he will accomplish this, Mr. Goncharenko believes Trump’s fear of failure will benefit Kyiv.
Mr. Goncharenko expressed concern that the US may limit aid to Ukraine under Trump’s presidency, but he remains hopeful that Trump will act in the best interests of the USA and recognize Ukraine as a crucial ally. He is confident that Trump, who likes to win, will not want his presidency to start with a failure similar to Biden’s handling of Afghanistan.
When asked if Ukraine would be willing to negotiate peace by potentially giving up some of its territory, Mr. Goncharenko stated that Kyiv would “never accept” that its land belongs to Russia. He believes that Ukraine will reclaim its territories through other means and emphasized that these territories were, are, and will remain Ukrainian.
Overall, Mr. Goncharenko is optimistic about Trump’s approach to the war in Ukraine and believes that the president-elect’s desire to succeed will benefit the country in the long run.
