The Fourth District Appellate Court has reversed the detention order of former Sangamon County Sheriff deputy Sean P. Grayson, allowing him to be released with conditions set by the circuit court. The court has asked for a hearing to determine the least restrictive conditions for Grayson’s pretrial release, which may include home confinement or monitoring. Grayson’s attorney argued that he is not a flight risk due to health complications from colon cancer, but the presiding judge had ordered his detention citing his behavior after the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey. Massey, a Black woman, was shot in her home after calling 911 about a possible prowler, an incident that garnered national attention. The U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the sheriff’s office for its interactions with Black people and those with behavioral health disabilities. Grayson remains in custody at the Macon County Jail in Decatur, with additional issues to resolve before his release, including the possibility of an appeal by the State to the Illinois State Supreme Court.
