No. 18 Florida’s scrappy defensive play and aggressive nature resulted in a 75-58 victory over Wake Forest in the ESPN Events Invitational. Despite a slow start, the Gators remained unbeaten by pressuring the ball and pushing the tempo, leading to 10 steals. Coach Todd Golden credited Wake Forest for controlling the game early on but praised his team for staying the course and adapting to the physical play.
Wake Forest had opportunities to build a double-digit lead in the first half but failed to do so as Florida adjusted and matched their physicality. The Gators took the lead after a burst of energy, including a dunk by Will Richard and key plays by Walter Clayton Jr., who finished with 21 points and 3 steals. Alex Condon and Alijah Martin also contributed to the win, with the team outrebounding Wake Forest and forcing turnovers.
The Gators will face Wichita State in the tournament championship after defeating Wake Forest. Despite both teams struggling with shooting, Florida’s ability to grab offensive rebounds and convert missed shots proved to be the difference. Coach Golden praised his team for playing a more complete game and expressed confidence heading into the championship matchup. The game against Wichita State will be televised on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
