Representing Florida’s 28th Congressional District, U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez expressed his support for President-Elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Gimenez stated that Mexico’s alleged support of drug cartels and enemies, as well as sending oil to Cuba, must be addressed, and he commended Trump’s decision to implement a 25% tariff on all products entering the U.S. until the drug and border crisis is resolved. He also endorsed Trump’s plan to add a 10% tariff on Chinese products, calling it a bold action.
However, concerns have been raised about potential price increases for American consumers and the risk of a global trade war due to these tariffs. The Peterson Institute for International Economics projected that Trump’s policies could lead to a significant increase in inflation, potentially reaching between 6% and 9.3% in 2026. Despite this, Trump reiterated his commitment to implementing tariffs, linking them to stopping the flow of drugs, particularly Fentanyl, and illegal immigration.
The announcement of these tariffs comes as Trump seeks to address issues of the economy and rising living costs, following his victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election. Trump emphasized that the tariffs will remain in place until Mexico and Canada take action to address the ongoing problems, stating that they must pay a significant price until the issues are resolved.
