Chad withdraws from military partnership with France

Chad has announced that it is ending its defence cooperation agreement with France, requiring French soldiers to leave the country. Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah stated that Chad is a sovereign state and is “very jealous of its sovereignty”. The decision comes as Chad has moved closer to Russia in recent years and aims to redefine its strategic partnerships. France currently has about 1,000 soldiers in Chad, making it the last Sahel country to host French troops. Chad’s desire to assert its sovereignty after 66 years of independence was cited as a reason for ending the agreement.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby, who has sought closer ties with Russia, has been leading Chad after his father’s rule. The move to end the defence agreement with France signals a shift in alliances for Chad, which has cooperated closely with Western nations in the past. The decision comes amid a trend of French troops being withdrawn from other Sahel countries like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso following military coups. Chad’s decision to end the agreement marks a significant step towards asserting its independence and redefining its foreign relations.
