The Republican Party of Florida has officially removed Christian Ziegler as its chairperson after a sex scandal and criminal investigation into rape allegations against him. Evan Power, a Tallahassee lobbyist, won the race for chairperson with 135 votes, taking over Ziegler’s position. The decision to oust Ziegler was made at a closed-door meeting in Tallahassee after weeks of turmoil within the party.
During the meeting, party officials voiced their support for new leadership to navigate through a crucial election year. Ziegler, who has denied the rape allegations, was not present at the meeting. The party also faces challenges in fundraising amid the scandal, with concerns that small-dollar donors may be pulling back support.
Following his election as chairperson, Power emphasized the need to rebuild trust with donors and move forward from the controversy. Governor Ron DeSantis endorsed Power in the race for chairperson, signaling a new chapter for the party with Power at the helm. The transition is aimed at putting the focus back on fundraising and ensuring the party’s success in upcoming elections.
Despite the ongoing investigation and potential legal challenges, Power and other party officials are confident in their decision to remove Ziegler and move towards a new leadership structure. The Republican Party of Florida is now looking ahead to the future and working towards regaining the trust of its supporters.
