Indian court examines Amazon’s warehouse labour conditions | Labour Rights Update

Amazon is currently facing prosecution in an Indian court for labor law violations at a warehouse near Delhi. The violation allegations include inadequate safety equipment and failure to comply with labor laws, as well as reports of workers being asked to take pledges not to take breaks until their daily targets were met. An internal investigation confirmed this incident, stating that it was isolated and disciplinary action was taken against the manager responsible.

The Haryana government conducted a detailed investigation through labor inspections at the warehouse, which concluded that labor laws were not being followed by Amazon. The company failed to provide safety gear, maintain proper records, or provide tight-fitting clothes to workers near moving machinery, as required by law.

Workers at the warehouse reported strict work targets, lack of rest opportunities, and high levels of monitoring. Amazon responded by stating that the targets are achievable, and workers have sufficient capacity, but workers claim they are heavily monitored and pressured to meet unrealistic goals. The company has an ADAPT system to track employee performance, which can lead to termination if targets are not met.

Amazon has faced criticism for its treatment of workers globally, with concerns raised by unions and investigations into monitoring practices. Workers in India are calling for more dignity and fairness in their working conditions, expressing a desire to abolish the ADAPT system to reduce constant monitoring and pressure to meet targets. With ongoing legal proceedings and continued scrutiny, Amazon faces challenges in addressing labor violations and improving working conditions for its employees in India.
