Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled to Florida for a dinner meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. This visit comes just days after Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on products from Canada and Mexico. Trudeau is the first leader from the G7 group to meet with the president-elect.
Trump’s tariff threat, which he announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, led to discussions between Trudeau and Trump. Trudeau pointed out the small number of migrants crossing from Canada compared to Mexico during their initial phone call. Trump also held a call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, describing it as productive.
Trudeau’s unannounced visit on Friday was not listed on public schedules. He was photographed leaving a hotel in West Palm Beach on his way to meet with Trump. Trudeau expressed concern over the potential impact of Trump’s proposed tariffs on both Canadians and Americans.
In his announcement, Trump demanded that Mexico and Canada address drug and immigration issues, threatening substantial consequences if they do not. He also mentioned imposing an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Throughout his campaign, Trump has promised to crack down on illegal migrants and drug trafficking. Despite his claims, statistics show a decline in violent crime in the U.S. for the third consecutive year.
