West Boca Raton made history by capturing their first football regional championship with a 17-0 victory over Wiregrass Ranch in a Class 6A regional final on Friday night. The team’s stellar defense played a crucial role in this achievement, allowing just 14 points in their three playoff wins. Junior defensive lineman Xavier Reid stood out with a strong performance, leading the team in tackles and sacks.
The Bulls, with a perfect 13-0 record, will now host a Class 6A state semifinal next Friday, making coach Dylan Potts proud of the progress the team has made in the past three years. Potts praised Reid, labeling him as the best defensive player in the state and credited him for the team’s success.
Despite standout junior running back Javian Mallory missing the game due to an injury, West Boca’s offense managed to score points, with sophomore Jayden Lockhart rushing for a touchdown and junior Mark Hanniford catching another. Lockhart emphasized the importance of home-field advantage and the team’s determination to keep pushing forward.
The game saw West Boca start strong, scoring early and leading 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. They further extended their lead to 17-0 by halftime, with key plays like Broadnax’s interception and Farfan’s field goal. The team’s defense continued to shine in the third and fourth quarters, shutting down Wiregrass Ranch’s scoring attempts.
The victory was a significant milestone for West Boca Raton, and the team now looks forward to the state semifinal with confidence and determination.
