Romania’s ruling party poised to win election despite rise of far-right | Election Updates

Romania’s recent general elections saw the left-leaning Social Democratic Party (SDP) maintain its majority in parliament, but facing significant gains by the far-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians. The SDP secured 24 percent of the vote, while the Alliance garnered about 18 percent. The National Liberal Party and the Save Romania Union also made notable showings with 14 percent and 10 percent of the vote, respectively.

The election witnessed the highest voter turnout for a parliamentary election in 20 years, with over 52.3 percent of eligible voters participating. The final results, however, are yet to be determined as ballots from Romanians living abroad are still being counted.

The rise of ultra-nationalist and anti-establishment parties presents a challenge to Romania’s current pro-European Union and pro-Ukraine stance. The country, a member of NATO, has been supportive of Ukraine in countering Russian aggression, even planning to donate a Patriot Missile System to its neighbor.

The election also saw the surprising success of hard-right populist Calin Georgescu in the first round of voting for the next president. Georgescu, affiliated with the Alliance for Uniting Romanians, beat out more established candidates with his controversial views on nationalism and ties to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Georgescu’s use of social media platforms like TikTok to reach voters has been particularly effective, attracting a significant following. His success has raised concerns about foreign interference and the future direction of Romanian democracy, as Georgescu advocates for a shift away from involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

As Romania prepares for the second round of voting for the presidency, the country finds itself at a critical juncture between upholding its democratic values or aligning closer with Russian interests, as represented by candidates like Georgescu.
