Five years after devastating fire, Notre Dame Cathedral restored and reopens to the public

The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris reopened to the public on December 8, 2024, more than five years after a devastating fire in April 2019. The fire, believed to be caused by an accident, collapsed the cathedral’s spire and destroyed its roof, leading to a massive restoration effort. The restoration project received nearly $900 million in donations from around the world. Reconstruction efforts included removing damaged scaffolding, constructing a new spire and roof, restoring the Grand Organ, repairing masonry, stained-glass windows, wrought iron railings, and vaults, and replacing choir stalls. The restoration involved a team of approximately 2,000 workers from various professions and cost almost $800 million. The project also required a thousand oak trees for reconstruction purposes. The cathedral reopened with planned ceremonies in December 2024, showcasing the collaborative effort of hundreds of experts and companies over five years to restore this iconic landmark to its former glory.
