Democratic state Rep. Christine Hunschofsky will be attending a meeting in Washington, D.C., with White House officials and state lawmakers to discuss efforts to reduce gun violence. The meeting is organized by Legislators for Safer Communities, a group co-chaired by Hunschofsky that focuses on gun safety and violence prevention. The discussion will address how federal progress on gun violence prevention can be continued at the state level. The meeting is expected to be the first of several conversations on this topic as power transitions in state legislatures.
President Joe Biden established the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention in 2023, led by Vice President Kamala Harris and key advisers Stefanie Feldman, Greg Jackson, and Rob Wilcox. This office builds on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, which aims to enhance background checks, fund state red flag laws, and combat arms trafficking. The act was a response to mass shootings in New York and Texas and received bipartisan support in Congress.
Hunschofsky, a strong advocate for gun safety legislation, has prioritized measures such as stricter background checks, banning “ghost guns,” and enhancing penalties for threats of mass violence. She leads Legislators for Safer Communities with lawmakers from Delaware, Nevada, Washington, Kentucky, and Illinois, all Democrats.
Florida lawmakers passed gun control measures in 2018 following the Parkland school shooting, where Hunschofsky worked to advocate for stricter gun laws. Her ongoing commitment to gun safety legislation has garnered support from various lawmakers and advocacy groups. The meeting in D.C. will address the future of gun violence prevention efforts at the state level as the political landscape changes.
