Jeanette Núñez, the current Lieutenant Governor of Florida, would become the first Cuban American and first female governor of the state if President-elect Donald Trump selects current Governor Ron DeSantis to lead the Pentagon. Núñez, 52, has deep roots in South Florida, being a Miami native and a graduate of Florida International University. She entered politics as a legislative aide and was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2010, eventually becoming speaker pro tempore in 2016.
Throughout her political career, Núñez has been a champion for issues such as in-state tuition for immigrant students and has worked in the health care sector, including overseeing government relations for a major hospital system. She currently serves as the chairwoman of Space Florida, the state’s aerospace agency, overseeing rocket launches from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center.
As lieutenant governor, Núñez has statutory responsibilities including acting as the governor’s successor in the event of a resignation. She also has direct involvement in economic and workforce development projects, as well as being the head of the Department of Health. Núñez is also the chairperson of Florida’s Cybersecurity Task Force and a member of the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking.
In addition to her political and professional accomplishments, Núñez has been caught in the crosshairs of immigration policies, with her support for in-state tuition for immigrant students contrasting with DeSantis’ repeal efforts. As a potential candidate for governor, Núñez’s background and experience make her a notable figure in Florida politics.
