Recovery efforts underway in search for missing grandma Elizabeth Pollard

The search for Elizabeth Pollard, a 64-year-old grandmother who disappeared while looking for her cat in a sinkhole in a coal mine town in Pennsylvania, has shifted from a rescue to a recovery mission. State officials and crews have been working tirelessly for three days to locate Pollard with no signs of life since she went missing on Monday. The effort includes pumping water through an abandoned underground mine to clear debris and rocks in a fragile area that poses the risk of collapse. Crews are now focusing on securing the mine for further access to recover Pollard, despite challenging conditions and low oxygen levels inside.

The sinkhole where Pollard is believed to have fallen is near a restaurant in Unity Township, and her car was found with her 5-year-old granddaughter safe inside. The girl was unable to provide any details about what happened. Authorities have indicated that the sinkhole likely opened up while Pollard was searching for her cat. Sinkholes are holes in the ground that form due to a lack of surface drainage, typically caused by water draining into the subsurface and dissolving the sediment below.

The situation has become increasingly precarious due to the unstable condition of the mine and the potential for inclement weather, prompting crews to work diligently to secure the area and recover Pollard. Despite the challenging circumstances, the search efforts continue, with state troopers and officials working on an expanded scale to locate Pollard and bring closure to her family.
