In yet another example of government incompetence in Florida, a federal lawsuit reveals that eligible new mothers are losing health coverage well before the promised 12 months after giving birth due to failures in the state’s Medicaid management system operated by Deloitte. Nearly 20,000 women were removed from coverage as of March 2024, and there are concerns that even more mothers lost coverage incorrectly. The blame is being shifted to Deloitte, but regardless of who is at fault, the state should not be jeopardizing the health of mothers and babies in such a critical time.
This Medicaid debacle is just one in a series of failures in state-run programs in Florida. From the unemployment system’s collapse at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to the unpaid health care claims for sick children and issues with school vouchers, Floridians are feeling the impact of the state’s inability to properly execute important programs. Despite the good intentions behind these programs, the lack of efficiency and accountability has left many residents stranded and struggling.
There is a clear competency crisis in Florida’s government programs, and it is crucial that this pattern of failure is addressed and corrected. Floridians deserve better and should not have to endure high-profile government failures that have become synonymous with the state. It is time for the state to take responsibility and ensure that its residents receive the help and assistance they need and deserve.
