Police officials are reporting that the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City appears to have been a “brazen targeted attack.” The gunman, who remains at large, is believed to have left the city after fleeing the scene on a bicycle. Police have released photos of the suspect, not wearing a mask, in hopes of reaching a wider audience.
The shooter, believed to have arrived in Manhattan on a bus from Atlanta, stayed at the HI New York City Hostel before carrying out the attack outside the Hilton Midtown. The suspect was captured on video several times before the shooting, with new footage showing him disposing of an object on trash bags near the crime scene.
Atlanta police have also been enlisted to assist in the investigation, as the manhunt for the shooter continues. The CEO of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, released a video addressing employees’ safety concerns in the wake of Thompson’s tragic death.
The police are urging anyone with information on the suspect to come forward, with tips being submitted via various channels. The hostel where the suspect stayed is cooperating with authorities, and employees have provided details about the individual. Police are continuing to analyze evidence, including bullet casings inscribed with cryptic phrases found at the scene of the shooting.
