Miami Hurricanes running back Chris Johnson Jr. has entered the transfer portal, becoming the third player from the team to do so recently. The second-year running back and Dillard High alumnus had limited playing time during his tenure at Miami, with 22 offensive snaps in 2023 and 27 offensive snaps this season. Despite his limited opportunities, Johnson had notable moments on the field, including scoring a touchdown and averaging 24.4 yards as a kick returner.
Johnson, a former star both in football and track at Dillard High, was rated as a three-star prospect coming out of high school and was known for his athleticism. With his decision to enter the transfer portal, he joins backup quarterback Reese Poffenbarger and offensive lineman Antonio Tripp Jr. as Miami players seeking new opportunities.
Looking ahead, Miami is set to return four scholarship running backs next season: Ajay Allen, Mark Fletcher Jr., Jordan Lyle, and Chris Wheatley-Humphrey. Additionally, there is the possibility of starter Damien Martinez returning for another year, though he may opt to enter the NFL draft. The Hurricanes have also recently signed four-star running back prospect Girard Pringle Jr., adding depth to their backfield.
Johnson’s transfer opens up new opportunities for him to showcase his talents elsewhere, while Miami continues to prepare for the upcoming season with a solid group of running backs.
