A devastating explosion in the Dutch city of The Hague on Saturday morning has left several apartments destroyed and multiple people injured. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but police are searching for a car that left the scene. Four people have been rescued and taken to the hospital, with one being a child. Emergency authorities are unsure of how many people may still be trapped. Five apartments were destroyed, and 40 neighbouring apartments have been evacuated. A specialised urban search and rescue team with four dogs trained to find victims has been deployed to the scene. Prime Minister Dick Schoof expressed shock at the disaster and sent his thoughts to the victims, those involved, and the emergency services working at the scene. The explosion was reminiscent of the earthquake that occurred in Turkey in early 2023, where the same search and rescue team was deployed. Residents of the city’s Mariahoeve neighbourhood reported hearing a huge bang and screams before dawn, with one woman mistaking it for an earthquake. Investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing as authorities continue to assess the situation and provide aid to those affected.
