Peggy Gossett-Seidman advocates for drowning prevention and clean water legislation

Republican Rep. Peggy Gossett-Seidman of Highland Beach, Florida, prioritizes water safety in her legislation, with three out of four bills in the 2025 Legislative Session focused on water-related issues. The first bill aims to make lifesaving rings mandatory at every beach to prevent drowning incidents, especially among children. Gossett-Seidman is working with a nonprofit called Drown Zero to implement this measure. Her second bill, the Safe Waterways Act, seeks to streamline reporting and public notification when public waterways are contaminated. This bill had bipartisan support but was vetoed by Governor Ron DeSantis due to jurisdictional issues. The bill is set to be reintroduced with improvements. Additionally, Gossett-Seidman is working on a bill to prevent drownings of children with autism spectrum disorder by educating adults who work with autistic children. She is also addressing glitches in legislation that caused Florida motorists to have their political party affiliation switched without consent when renewing their driver’s licenses online.

Gossett-Seidman, a former journalist and town commissioner, won re-election to represent House District 91, which includes Boca Raton and parts of Highland Beach and West Boca. During her first term, she passed measures to unseal Jeffrey Epstein’s grand jury records and expressed support for Israel after a terrorist attack. Gossett-Seidman’s commitment to water safety and addressing other important issues in her district highlights her dedication to serving her constituents and improving public safety in Florida.
