At least three killed in lethal Russian attack in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an enhancement of Ukraine’s air defence system following a Russian air strike on the city of Zaphorizhzhia that left three people dead and 20 injured, many of whom are in critical condition. The strike hit a private clinic in the city center, damaging buildings nearby. In a separate attack on the town of Zlatopil in the Kharkiv region, at least 11 people were injured in a double ballistic missile strike that damaged an administrative building and 16 residential buildings.

President Zelenskyy stated that the recent attacks highlight the urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, and he has requested assistance from Ukraine’s partners to do so. This comes as Zelenskyy expressed openness to the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine to ensure the country’s security and potentially pave the way for Ukraine to join NATO.

Zelenskyy’s proposals come amidst diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict with Russia, which has escalated in recent years. The air strikes serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Ukraine as it seeks to defend against Russian aggression and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The international community will be closely monitoring developments in Ukraine as efforts to strengthen its defences and seek support from Western allies continue.
