Russia has expressed its openness to negotiations on Ukraine and welcomed peace initiatives after US President-elect Donald Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire” in the country. The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that President Putin welcomes peace initiatives, especially from Global South countries and BRICS partners.
Trump’s call for ceasefire came after a meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The statement from the Russian foreign ministry noted that President Putin has already laid out the conditions required for a ceasefire. However, Peskov also pointed out Ukraine’s rejection of negotiations, accusing Zelensky of blocking talks with Moscow.
The Kremlin spokesperson stated that Ukraine needs to revoke the decree blocking negotiations and resume dialogue based on previous agreements made in Istanbul to move towards peace. Despite Trump’s promises to end the Ukraine war, there has been a lack of engagement between the two countries involved in the conflict since it started with Crimea’s annexation in 2014 and escalated into a full-blown war when Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022.
The statement from Russia indicates a willingness to negotiate and work towards peace in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of reviving dialogue and addressing the current realities of the conflict. The international community will be watching closely to see if these peace initiatives result in tangible progress towards ending the violence and suffering in Ukraine.
