American Airlines Plane Crash Mirrors 1982 Accident on Potomac River

A tragic mid-air collision between an American Airlines regional passenger aircraft and a U.S. Army Black Hawk Helicopter occurred on the night of Wednesday, Jan. 29, over the Potomac River. This incident took place at the same site where another infamous plane crash happened almost exactly 43 years ago involving Air Florida Flight 90 in 1982. At a press conference held on Thursday, officials announced that they believed none of the passengers or crew members from both flights had survived the crash.

The older crash involved a Boeing 737-222 that struck a bridge while taking off from what is now the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Only five people survived that tragic event. The National Transportation Safety Board reported several causes for the crash, including the crew failing to use engine anti-ice and making the decision to take off with snow and ice on the aircraft’s surfaces.

The survivors of the 1982 crash have since lived out their lives with the memories of that fateful day. Flight attendant Kelly Duncan, who had a spiritual awakening while struggling to survive in the Potomac River, left aviation to work in early childhood education. Passenger Joseph Stiley, an experienced pilot, suffered severe injuries in the crash but survived. The two other survivors have since passed away.

The tragic events of both crashes have inspired media depictions and personal reflections from survivors over the years, keeping the memories alive and reminding everyone of the importance of safety in air travel.
