Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau have a discussion leading to the pause of tariffs on Canada

President Donald Trump announced a 30-day pause on proposed U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, following efforts by Canadian leaders to secure the border. The decision came after a call between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as Trump had previously threatened 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods unless more was done to prevent unauthorized migrants and fentanyl from entering the U.S. Trudeau stated that Canada was spending $1.3 billion on reinforcing the border, with measures including additional personnel, a Fentanyl Czar, and designated drug cartels as terrorists. Additionally, Canada plans to invest $200 million in a new intelligence program focused on organized crime and fentanyl.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed satisfaction with the deal, emphasizing his responsibility as President to ensure the safety of all Americans. In a similar move, Trump also paused proposed 25% tariffs on Mexico after reaching a border enforcement agreement with Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo. These decisions prevented an immediate trade war between the U.S. and its allies, calming investors who were initially spooked by the potential tariffs. The S&P 500 stock index initially dropped in response to the news but recovered some of its losses following the resolution with Mexico.
