Volunteer hiker found deceased in Great Smoky Mountains after being reported missing

A 73-year-old hiker named Ann Houghton was found deceased in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park over the weekend after being reported missing. Houghton, a longtime volunteer in the park, had planned a hike from Jan. 28-29 but was reported missing when her vehicle was found at the Smokemont Campground. Local law enforcement and search and rescue teams searched for her in the Smokemont area. Houghton’s cause of death is still under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has seen a total of 137 deaths between 2007 and March 2024, with the majority being unintentional causes like vehicle crashes, drownings, and falls. However, these statistics may not accurately reflect how safe the park is, as they do not account for the millions of visitors who have safely enjoyed the park during this time.

Recent deaths at the park include a drowning in the Oconaluftee River and a vehicle crash on Foothills Parkway. While the park holds risks like any other outdoor space, it remains a popular destination for millions of visitors. The park service offers condolences to the friends and family of Ann Houghton, recognizing her dedication to the park and volunteer service.
